This stunning new ultra modern knockdown and rebuild custom designed house and pool was successfully completed by Domus Homes from concept to completion.


Location – Illawong.

Illawong is a waterfront suburb adjoining the Georges and Woronora Rivers. Illawong also adjoins Alfords Point, Bangor and Bonnet Bay and lies opposite Lugarno, Peakhurst Heights, Oatley and Kyle Bay and is close to Oyster Bay, Kangeroo Point and Sylvania Waters, all river front suburbs with stunning views in the Sutherland Shire area which also includes Cronulla and its famous beaches.



The existing house was a small fibre shack which was uncomfortable to live in, but sitting on a large double block of riverfront land. The house was destined to be knocked down for a rebuild due to its stunning location with views over the Georges River. The house was grossly inadequate to accommodate the family of five.


Client’s Brief.

The clients required four large bedrooms upstairs all with en suite bathrooms, walk in robes and built in cupboards. The master suite was to include a large open plan bathroom and sitting area with “his” and “hers” walk in robes. Downstairs accommodation was to comprise a large entertaining kitchen, living and dining room opening up onto a large entertainers’ terrace and infinity edged pool. A guest room with en suite, guest powder room, and movie room were also required. Furthermore, a pantry room and laundry were required off the kitchen. A large double garage and rumpus room above it was also requested.

Materials Selection.

Domus Homes’ used a fibre cement product called “Cemintel” for the entire external skin of the flat roofed house. The panels are prefinished so no painting is required and they provide a modern look to the building and are ecologically sound. Interior colours were kept simple using whites throughout, but with large, sandy coloured, crosscut travertine tiles on the ground floor and blackbutt timber on the first floor to add warmth. The staircase in the entry lobby was manufactured from cast iron and painted gun metal grey.


Custom Design.

Domus Homes designers were presented with a challenge because the river views are on the south side of the land. In order to overcome this, three upstairs bedrooms, the ground floor guest room, movie room and entry were all designed to face north for maximum light and warmth. By creating a central courtyard between the entry wing and the main living area and master suite wing, windows and doors could be positioned to allow north light into these south facing rooms. The design of this large house is modular with a flat roof. The entire width of the ground floor comprises bifold doors which open up onto a large Vergola covered patio extending onto the wet edge pool, perfect for entertaining multiple guests. The master suite upstairs also extends the full width of the house overlooking the river views and comprising a large open plan bathroom, bedroom and lounge room with two large walk in robes. A large glassed double volume entry lobby finishes off this grand home. Sky lights were used in bathrooms to complement the windows to make those rooms light and airy.

Due to Domus Homes strategic design approach, development approval was achieved within weeks from Sutherland Council.
