FINDING A BALANCE
This Dover Heights makeover utilised the existing structure in order to minimise costs
What was the clients brief?
The idea was to maximise the use of the existing structure so as to minimise costs. They wanted a simple look internally and a contemporary architectural style for the exterior. The house faces west so the design had to allow the client to enjoy the water views without baking in summer, hence the adjustable louvers. The client did not want to over capitalise.
What look did you create?
We wanted to create a contemporary look with clean lines that was warm and appealing and which also responded practically to the surroundings, such as privacy, weather protection, view maximisation and inside/outside enjoyment. Creating privacy was a part of their brief. Exposed steel beams on the façade and aluminium louvers create a modern look.
What materials did you choose?
The client wanted a full-brick, concrete and rendered home. Structural steel elements were also added for support and aesthetic reasons. A waterproofing paint undercoat was used on the exterior for protection against rain/damp. The roofing is corrugated metal. Cross-cut travertine paving was used externally and internally, in the bathrooms, stairwell and rumpus room.
What was the biggest challenge?
Getting council approval, which took 12 months due to neighbour complaints about loss of view, which led us to modify the design.
